Step 1 — it reads the actual posting
A link is opened and read, not "searched": the structured job data on the page is used first, the page text second. When a page cannot be read, the fallback is labelled so you know what the match was built on. Career pages expire, so the posting text is stored with your application.
Step 2 — a keyword audit you can act on
The audit runs on your device and sorts the posting's terms into three lists: terms your resume already states the same way; terms it states in different wording ("REST API" versus "APIs"), which you can approve as alignments; and terms that are truly absent, which are never written in for you. Boilerplate — benefits, equal-opportunity clauses, pay bands — is stripped first so the audit measures the role, not the ad.
Step 3 — one rewrite, from your facts
Tailor rewrites the summary, the skills and the bullets in the posting's language. It sends your full bullet pool minus only the lines you hid, so the model can choose transferable evidence, and it records what it omitted. A named-item check restores any technology you actually used that the rewrite genericised away. Hidden bullets keep their exact text, so your earlier choices survive.
Step 4 — measured, not estimated
The result card shows the same deterministic scan before and after, the strategy the rewrite used, and any gap as a question ("Did you lead the migration, or take part?") for you to answer or ignore. Open it in the preview, save it as a version, or pick a different base version and run again. Every version can be previewed without restoring it.
What it refuses to do
It will not add a skill from the posting that your resume does not support, invent a metric, or change an employer, title or date. Gaps become questions, never claims. That is the whole point of tailoring from your facts: a resume you can defend line by line in the interview.

Will it give me an ATS score before and after?
It shows a deterministic keyword scan before and after — which posting terms appear, which appear in other wording, which are absent. It does not show an invented percentage, because a made-up number is not a measurement.
Can I tailor a resume I have not built in TrinityTalent?
Yes. In "Start from" you can pick your current resume, any saved version, or upload a file. An uploaded resume is parsed and tailored in one run, and your current resume is safety-versioned before the result replaces the working copy.
Is tailoring free?
Tailoring calls a model, so it is metered by a daily fair-use cap; within that cap it is free while TrinityTalent is in beta. Editing, checking and exporting never call a model and are always free.
